Tigers announce two-year deal with J.D. Martinez

The Detroit Tigers and outfielder J.D. Martinez avoided arbitration by agreeing to a two-year, $18.5 million contract.

What It Means:

We first heard about this deal on Monday, and now it's official. Martinez will earn $6.75 million in 2016, with this total increasing to $11.75 million in 2017, according to Anthony Fenech of the Detroit Free Press. The new deal buys out the final two seasons of Martinez's arbitration eligibility, so as of now, he'll become a free agent after the 2017 season.

Martinez posted a .372 wOBA, which ranked 16th, in 158 games last season. He set several career highs, including home runs (38), runs scored (93), RBI (102) and Wins Above Replacement (5.0). Our metrics liked his performance too as his 2.38 nERD ranked 17th.
