How early are you willing to take a QB?
In standard scoring, what's the earliest you would take Manning, Brees or Rodgers?
While they obviously provide a weekly advantage at the QB position, I probably won't take them or think about taking them until the 3rd round because I know RBs are scarce. I also want a stud WR if possible (or a hot RB2), which I will need to get in the first two rounds. I don't want to miss out at the RB or WR position because I took Manning, Brees or Rodgers.
I also know that this mentality means I probably won't have any of those three on my team because they are going fairly early in most mock drafts I do, but I'm OK with that. I figure the people taking those three are going to be missing a solid RB1 or WR that I can then plug in to my team. I also know that I can get a reliable QB in the 5th or 6th round, which I am OK with.
I say all of this with a grain of salt because my draft strategy is always changing and I haven't picked the same QB in any of the mock drafts I've done. So, if on draft day, these guys are available for my 3rd round pick, I would take them...I just don't want to miss out on the positions with larger point differentials between the 1st and 3rd round than QBs.
Like Lauren said, what are you giving up. I just watched people in my league reach for top 3 QB's in the first and second and they have very average depth at RB and WR. I ended up with Peterson, Graham, and DeMarco Murray. I still ended up with Romo and Cutler; not elite but going on match-ups I'll likely be top 10 there. I won my league last year with the same strategy.
The point is, you still can get very solid QB's in the later rounds but you can't do the same with RB and WR.
