New to Fantasy Baseball and Keepers
I've never played fantasy baseball before and I've never been in a keeper league in any other fantasy sports, so I need some help. Our league allows you to keep 3 position players and 2 pitchers from those on your team that weren't drafted in the first four rounds the previous year. The players I've inherited are:

Miguel Montero (Ari - C)
Eric Hosmer (KC - 1B)
Edwin Encarnación (Tor - 1B,3B)
Martín Prado (Ari - 2B,3B,OF)
Desmond Jennings (TB - OF)
Josh Hamilton (LAA - OF)
Nick Swisher (Cle - 1B,OF)
Shin-Soo Choo (Tex - OF)
Neil Walker (Pit - 2B)
Ike Davis (NYM - 1B)
Jeff Samardzija (ChC - SP)
John Axford (Cle - RP)
Rafael Betancourt (Col - RP)
Jon Lester (Bos - SP)
R.A. Dickey (Tor - SP)
Jered Weaver (LAA - SP)

For position players, I'm thinking Encarnación, Choo, and Hosmer. For pitchers, it's a tossup for me with the 4 starters--maybe Samardzija and Lester? What else should I know about a keeper league draft or in-season strategy that a rookie wouldn't know?

Are there any keeper costs? I'd go Encarnacion, Choo, Hosmer like you said. For pitchers, I'd go Dickey and Weaver. Depends on your keeper rules, obviously younger players are more important (look at the prospects coming up and rookies). Definitely be aware of when guys get called up to play in the majors -- Jose Fernandez was a huge pickup last year and now he's my keeper for the next three years as a free agent.

No keeper costs and there is no keeper time limit (so the guy with Trout is probably looking good for the next 10 years). So, would it be a good drafting strategy to grab a young guy like Xander Bogaerts or Archie Bradley in the 5th round even if that is way above his ADP in a standard draft?

Wow, no time limit is huge. It depends how much patience you have as a manager. Taking those guys early could pay huge dividends (as long as you can keep them) long term, but it could ruin you for this season. Definitely keep an eye on anyone on this list: http://www.fangraphs.com/blogs/2014-top-100-prospects/

Also, knowing the other people in your league will help a lot, because then you can gauge when it's worthwhile to reach

Thanks! I might just load up on prospects this year as I think I already know I'm playing for the future. Some of the teams are already stacked (the owner with Trout can also keep Kershaw and Harper), so I'll probably just use this year

    why would you keep Dickey?

I agree with your hitting strategy and with the pitchers i would take 2 of the next 3: Lester, Samardzija or Weaver. You don't have to take a closer because you can get those guys back in the draft.
