Kirk Cousins was willing to sign long-term with Washington for $20 million a year
Washington quarterback Kirk Cousins would have signed a multi-year deal with the team last offseason if offered $20 million per year, reports Yahoo's Charles Robinson via multiple sources familiar with the negotiations.
Per usual, Washington's front office messed up, with Robinson saying fingers are being pointed at team president Bruce Allen. They wouldn't offer Cousins more than $16 million annually during last year's negotiations, yet they are going to pay him a combined $44 million in guarantees between the 2016 and 2017 seasons -- all the while increasing the likelihood he walks in free agency next offseason.
Cousins earned the sixth-most Passing Net Expected Points (NEP) per drop back among the 39 quarterbacks to drop back at least 100 times in 2016. Washington also had the sixth-best offense in the NFL last season, according to schedule adjusted Offensive NEP per play.
