Falcons want Tevin Coleman to catch more passes

The Atlanta Falcons want to get second-year running back Tevin Coleman more involved as a pass catcher this season.

What It Means:

This is just the latest example of the Falcons talking about getting Coleman more touches. Last year's third-round pick gave his thoughts saying, "They’re finding more ways to get the backs out there and get them the ball. So it’s going to be exciting for us to be back there and get the ball more than just running." Catching passes is one of teammate Devonta Freeman's fantasy assets (he tallied 73 receptions last season), but Coleman showed decent hands in college. Atlanta seems deadly serious about deploying more of a committee in the backfield this season, but Freeman's red zone and third-down work still keep him on the RB1/2 borderline.

Our models currently expect Coleman to rush for 324 yards and 1.87 scores on 90 attempts, while also pitching in with 147 yards and 0.25 touchdowns on 23 catches. Meanwhile, we have Freeman pegged for 241 carries with 979 yards rushing and 7.36 touchdowns, paired with 68 catches for 577 yards and 1.93 scores through the air. These numbers would make Freeman our fifth-highest fantasy option at the running back position.
