Geno Smith won't have a long leash this season
New York Jets head coach Todd Bowles won't be giving Geno Smith time to overcome struggles this season, Bowles' first year as the team's coach.
Bowles wants to win and win quickly, knowing that an 8-8 season just won't cut it in New York. That's the biggest reason why he won't wait around if Smith struggles. Ryan Fitzpatrick is currently the team's second-string quarterback.
According to our Passing Net Expected Points (NEP) metric, Fitzpatrick was the better of the two quarterbacks last season. Fitzpatrick, with the Houston Texans, posted a Passing NEP of 28.12, which ranked 18th among the 37 quarterbacks who attempted at least 200 drop backs last year. Smith's score was just 5.25 and ranked 28th, though he lived on the wrong side of zero before a monstrous Week 17 outing.
