49ers could trade former third-overall pick Trey Lance

Ian Rapoport believes the San Francisco 49ers could field offers on former third-overall pick Trey Lance after his recent depth chart demotion.

What It Means:

At this point, it looks like Lance's days in San Francisco could be numbered. The team announced Wednesday that Sam Darnold would officially be their QB2 for the upcoming season, leaving Lance with QB3 duties in the final weeks before the season. It would now take multiple injuries for Lance to see the field this season for the 49ers, so a trade could potentially make sense for both parties. However, it is unclear whether any teams will have interest in the former first-rounder after the 49ers' demonstrated unwillingness to let him play.

Lance spent most of his rookie season behind Jimmy Garoppolo as the 49ers pushed for a championship and then suffered a brutal leg injury in his second season as the team's opening week starter. We haven't seem him do too much on an NFL field at this point (102) career attempts, but any team that had a high pre-draft grade on him might consider attempting to trade for him with the season just around the corner.
