Spurs looking into signing Clippers' Chris Paul in free agency

The San Antonio Spurs are "exploring the feasibility" of making a free-agent run at Los Angeles Clippers point guard Chris Paul, according to ESPN's Marc Stein.

What It Means:

If the Spurs do make a run at CP3, it likely means they'll have a really tough time bringing back Jonathon Simmons and some of their other veterans. The Clippers are still expected to bring CP3 back, and take the threat of the Spurs' pursuit "very seriously." It is important to note that the Spurs won't have the requisite cap space to make Paul a comparable offer unless they can clear some salaries off the books. Also, assuming the Clippers are willing to offer him a max contract, it's hard to imagine CP3 leaving $200 million in guaranteed money on the table.

Paul's 12.8 nERD was the 13th-most among NBA players in the 2016-17 season. He played a career-low 31.5 minutes per game this year, but had a career-high .555 Effective Field Goal rate.
