3 MLB FanDuel Studs to Target on Thursday 8/12/21

Just like in other sports, the focal point of your daily fantasy baseball lineups will be your high-salary studs. These guys take up by far the biggest chunk of your cap space, but they also offer the highest ceiling. And in the case of pitchers, the high-salary options typically come with the highest floors, too.

For hitters, we're looking for guys with big numbers, strong matchups, and with players around them that are likely to produce well, too, increasing our chances for runs and RBI. For pitchers, we want big strikeout numbers, while the ability to go deep in a game and pick up a win is also valuable.

With your high-salary picks playing such a big role in your lineup, you need to be right on these guys, so let's take a look at a few top-end options you can count on to anchor your lineup today.

Yu Darvish, SP, San Diego Padres ($9,200)

This main slate is tiny -- and that means we have to be pretty judicious with who we play at the starting pitcher slot. And yes, we are gonna pick on the Arizona Diamondbacks yet again.

The San Diego Padres and Yu Darvish will take on the Snakes, who, over the last week, have struck out at a 30.3% clip while posting the second-worst wOBA. In fact, since the start of July, Arizona's 85 wRC+ and 24.9% strikeout rate both rank third-worst in the majors, per FanGraphs.

Alex Wood and Kevin Gausman have been strong in back-to-back outings against the Diamondbacks (admittedly, Wood ran out of steam in the sixth). With Arizona struggling mightily and Darvish sporting a slate-best projection of 37.1 points, Yu is the arm I wanna rock with.

Jake Cronenworth, 1B/2B, San Diego Padres ($3,600)

Taylor Widener takes the ball for the Arizona Diamondbacks, and while he has had some flashes of quality, there's been a little bit of ugly mixed in, too. His 5.81 FIP and 2.15 homers per nine showcase his troubles.

That makes bats like Jake Cronenworth really enticing, and he's been an unsung hero this fantasy season. Prior to the year, it was hard to pin down how much playing time he might receive, but Cronenworth has smashed his way into the lineup. Spanning 480 plate appearances, the lefty has bombed his way to a 122 wRC+ and .475 slugging percentage.

Consider Cronenworth tonight in a spot where he could really pop.

Eloy Jimenez, OF, Chicago White Sox ($4,100)

Can we lean on Eloy Jimenez tonight?

Hell yes, we can. Jimenez and the rest of the Chicago White Sox match up with Andrew Heaney. And let's be clear -- Heaney can be a bit of a confounding case. His 4.48 FIP, driven by a sparkling 28.3% strikeout rate, shows he has been pretty darn good in some spots. But he's also allowing 1.82 homers per nine this season along with a 43.5% fly-ball rate.

Eloy has been mashing since his return from injury. He carries a .711 slugging percentage with five jacks in a small sample size of 47 plate appearances this season. He could be in for a huge night with the platoon advantage against homer-prone Heaney.
