New York Mets pitcher Steven Matz (back) threw a bullpen session Tuesday at Citi Field.
The next step for Matz is to throw in an instructional league game on Thursday with the hopes of having him be available to start Game 4 of the National League Divisional Series next week. Matz sustained the injury on September 24th and has not pitched in a game since.
The Mets are showing a tremendous amount of confidence in the 24-year-old lefty if they throw him next week. Matz has made six career big-league starts and has a 3.56 xFIP over that span. The Mets' starting rotation had the third best xFIP in the league during the regular season, so using Matz in crunch time is a major endorsement.
