Max Scherzer (neck) could return for Nationals on Sunday

Washington Nationals pitcher Max Scherzer (neck) could start one game of Sunday's doubleheader against the New York Mets.

What It Means:

Scherzer, who has been out since August 13 due to neck tightness, may attempt to throw a bullpen session Friday, which would put him in position for a Sunday start. Even if it's not this weekend, the 33-year-old ace right-hander should be back in the Nationals' rotation within the next week. A.J. Cole will start for Washington in tonight's series opener against the Mets.

Scherzer owns a 2.25 ERA (2nd in the majors), 0.85 WHIP (1st), and 35.7 strikeout percentage (2nd) in 160 1/3 innings this season while going 12-5 across 24 starts.
