Boston Red Sox reliever Tyler Thornburg has been diagnosed with a right shoulder impingement and will be shut down from throwing for 10 days.
Thornburg is likely facing an extended stint on the shelf, but he'll be re-evaluated after the 10 days. He's been limited to only two appearances this spring after Boston acquired him in a trade with the Milwaukee Brewers over the winter. The 28-year-old right-hander was penciled in as the club's Opening Day setup man.
Prior to the diagnosis, numberFire's algorithms had Thornburg pegged for a 3.71 ERA, 1.12 WHIP and 27.6 strikeout percentage over 58 1/3 innings this upcoming season.
