The Washington Nationals are closing in on a deal with free agent catcher Matt Wieters, according to Jon Heyman of FanRag Sports.
Wieters will likely take over starting catching duties for the Nationals following the departure of Wilson Ramos earlier this offseason. The 30-year-old backstop has been with the Baltimore Orioles organization for his entire career since they drafted him back in 2007.
Wieters slashed .243/.302/.409 across 464 plate appearances last season, with 17 home runs and an 18.3 percent strikeout rate -- his lowest since 2014.
