Houston Astros designated hitter/infielder/outfielder Yulieski Gurriel will start in left field against the Oakland Athletics on Wednesday.
The plan was for Gurriel to serve as the Astros starting third baseman for the after arriving in the majors earlier this month, but a hamstring injury derailed that plan, and Alex Bregman is now holding things down on the hot corner for Houston. Gurriel last played as a regular outfielder back in 2005 as a 21-year-old center fielder in Cuba. A short porch at Houston's Minute Maid Park should help him ease into things and he did log one start in left during his time with Triple-A Fresno prior to being called up.
The 32-year-old Cuban is slashing .389/.450/.500 through his first seven major league games (20 plate appearances). His seven hits have come in the form of five singles and two doubles.
