Pittsburgh Pirates catcher Chris Stewart (knee) will take part in a rehab assignment at Double-A Altoona beginning on Friday.
Stewart has been beleaguered by both knee and ankle injuries at various points during the summer. He has begun running the bases of late. Trainer Todd Tomczyk voiced the possibility of knee surgery back in early July, but it looks like Stewart might be able to avoid any sort of procedure. Any setbacks in August could ultimately cost him the season, however.
Stewart is slashing .198/.305/.275 across 105 appearances at the plate this season. He's posted a .260 wOBA with one long ball and seven RBI's.
