St. Louis Cardinals third baseman Matt Carpenter is out of the lineup Wednesday because his wife is about to have a baby.
It seemed odd the Cardinals would rest their best left-handed hitter against Chicago Cubs right-hander Jake Arrieta. Now we have a good reason for the absence. Ruben Tejada is starting at third base and batting eighth in the afternoon tilt at Busch Stadium. Kolten Wong will take a turn at leadoff.
Carpenter is slashing .250/.378/.506. His ISO of .256 is on pace for a career high while his BABIP of .271 is on pace for a career low. He has nine home runs and 32 RBI's in 204 plate appearances for the year.
