Colorado Rockies Kyle Freeland is scheduled to return to the starting rotation Saturday against the Cincinnati Reds.
After a strong 2018 season, Freeland struggled at the start of this season and was demoted to the minors in May. His results were poor in Triple-A as well, where he posted an 8.80 ERA and 5.26 FIP in 29 2/3 innings.
Freeland's strikeout rate in the majors has dropped from 20.5% to 18.0% from 2018 to 2019, while his walk rate has increased from 8.3% to 9.2%. Even more damaging has been a home run rate spike, which has gone from 0.8 per nine innings to 2.4. His groundball rate has declined from 46% to 42.6%, while his HR/FB rate has gone up from 8.5% to 21.6%.
