Signature Benching

There are similar themes among the first two trends this week, but that may be expected with matches coming in such quick order. Again it is clear that managers must tweak lineups to keep players fresh, but matchweek 20 brought with it some surprising lineup choices as stars were left on the bench.

Gylfi Sigurdsson started Everton's match on the bench despite being their best player all season long. Brighton's lead attacker Glenn Murray was dropped in favor of Florin Andone. Both Sigurdsson and Murray made an appearance in the second half, but Brighton won the match. It is unclear if these two key players are on the verge of seeing fewer minutes.

Leroy Sane was benched for Manchester City while Kevin De Bruyne failed to make the 18-man roster. Burnley keeper Joe Hart was dropped to the bench for Tom Heaton, who returned for the first time in over a year. Burnley and Manchester City both won, so the moves could prove to be long-term choices.
