Pittsburgh did not offer Schultz a qualifying offer, which made him an unrestricted free agent. This allowed the Penguins to offer him significantly less than what he made last season ($3.9 million). Schultz played 45 games with the Edmonton Oilers and 18 with the Penguins after being traded, and tallied a career low 18 points (4 goals, 14 assists).

Schultz was coming off back-to-back 30 point seasons, making his production in 2015-16 disappointing. He was poor at driving possession as well, posting a Corsi For Percentage of 50.1 and a Relative Corsi For Percentage at Even Strength -7.0.
