Flyers don't intend to trade Steve Mason or Michal Neuvirth

Philadelphia Flyers goalie Steve Mason or Michal Neuvirth are not expected to be dealt over the summer, Flyers' general manager Ron Hextall said.

What It Means:

Neuvirth stepped up nicely in the playoffs, and that's sparked debate as to whether he should be the team's starter over Mason. Either way, the fact the Flyers have two potential candidates for the top job has led to trade speculation. It doesn't sound like that's probable though. "I don't believe that's a strength that you want to weaken," Hextall said. "The old saying, Wayne Gretzky got traded, right? So I'm not going to sit here and say no I wouldn't trade anybody on our team, because the reality of it is, if the deal was right, it's my job to strengthen our team and the organization. It's certainly not something we're focusing on or looking to do."

Mason was the starter for most of the season, but Neuvirth came in after Philly lost the first three games of their first-round series and allowed just two goals on 105 shots as the Flyers fought back and forced a Game 6. In the regular season, Neuvirth posted an 18-8-4 record with a 2.27 goals against average and .924 save percentage. In 54 regular-season outings, Mason owned a 23-19-10 mark with a .918 save percentage and 2.51 goals against average.
