Maple Leafs ship Dion Phaneuf to Senators in nine-player trade

Defenseman Dion Phaneuf has been traded from the Toronto Maple Leafs to the Ottawa Senators in a nine-player deal.

What It Means:

The Senators also acquired Matt Frattin, Casey Bailey, Ryan Rupert and Cody Donaghey from Toronto in exchange for Jared Cowen, Colin Greening, Milan Michalek, Tobias Lindberg and Ottawa's second-round pick in the 2017 NHL Draft. The Senators had been looking to improve their defense, while the rebuilding Maple Leafs wanted to rid themselves of Phaneuf's massive contract.

Phaneuf has 24 points (three goals, 21 assists) in 51 games for Toronto this season and has been decent at driving possession. His Corsi For Percentage of 51.6 is well above his totals from each of the past three seasons, and his Relative Corsi For Percentage at Even Strength is 1.4. Our projections currently give Ottawa a 15.56 percent chance at making the playoffs, and we'll see if Phaneuf's arrival changes this significantly.
