Winnipeg signs Dustin Byfuglien to five-year extension

Winnipeg Jets defenseman Dustin Byfuglien has inked a five-year contract extension with the club.

What It Means:

Byfuglien's new deal carries an annual average value of $7.6 million. His name has popped up in trade rumors recently, but this deal takes him off the trade block. Byfuglien would have become an unrestricted free agent following this season if a deal wasn't worked out with Winnipeg.

Byfuglien has 32 points (15 goals, 17 assists) in 52 games played this season. His 15 goals are tied for second most among defensemen. He's been excellent at driving possession. His Corsi For Percentage is 55.1, and his Relative Corsi For at Even Strength is 6.6. We project Byfuglien to tally another 21 points (eight goals, 13 assists) over the remaining course of the season.
