Texans' Brian Hoyer stakes claim to job with 300-yard night
Houston Texans quarterback Brian Hoyer completed 24-of-31 passes for 312 yards, 2 touchdowns and an interception in Houston's 27-20, Week 5 loss to the Indianapolis Colts, coming on in the second quarter in relief of Ryan Mallett.
Mallett took a shot to the ribs midway through the second quarter, sending Hoyer onto the field for what was probably supposed to be a play or two. Instead, Hoyer immediately galvanized Houston's stagnant offense, moving it up and down the field as Mallett stood on the sideline. Hoyer relentlessly peppered DeAndre Hopkins with targets, and found Jaelen Strong for two touchdowns (one of which was a lucky hail mary).
It's going to be hard for the Texans to send Hoyer back to the bench after a game where he racked up 18.44 Passing Net Expected Points (NEP). Houston takes on the Jacksonville Jaguars in Week 6.
