The belief is that there is "confidence on both sides" that the San Francisco 49ers and quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo will agree on a long-term deal.
Originally, the 49ers were going to put the franchise tag on the relatively unproven quarterback. But, after going 5-0 in five impressive starts, the 26-year-old would cost $25 million for one year under the tag. His small sample size won't help him in contract negotiations, but if the 49ers want to lock him up it could turn into a complicated, back-and-forth process.
In 5 starts, Garoppolo averaged 308.4 passing yards while completing 67.1% of his passes, with 6 of his 176 attempts going for touchdowns.
