Alex Smith remains unquestioned starter for Chiefs

Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Alex Smith remains the team's starter, head coach Andy Reid stated.

What It Means:

"It's Alex's job. There's no gray area with that," Reid said in regards to rookie Patrick Mahomes taking over as the Chiefs' starting quarterback. The 10th overall pick from this year's draft has shined so far this preseason, but Smith has been nothing short of excellent himself, completing 12-of-15 passes for 131 yards and a touchdown. The 33-year-old veteran is a solid late-round target in deeper fantasy leagues. It will likely require catastrophic regression from Smith for Mahomes to supplant him as the starter in Kansas City this season.

Smith is the 25th-ranked fantasy quarterback in our projections entering the season. We expect him to throw for 3,493.0 yards with 19.92 touchdowns and 13.5 interceptions in 2017, with another 137.7 rushing yards and 2.18 touchdowns on the ground.
