The San Francisco 49ers cut linebacker Philip Wheeler as part of their final roster cuts Friday.
Wheeler has fallen far from the graces of the NFL since the 2013 offseason, when he was a big-money acquisition for the Miami Dolphins. Back then, he signed a five-year, $26 million contract for the Fins. Now, he's been cut by both them and the linebacker-needy Niners. His future prospects in the NFL look slim if he can't make it in the defensive wasteland in San Francisco.
Wheeler was a shell of his former self in Miami last year, leading to a benching both from the middle linebacker and weak-side roles. He totaled just 45 tackles in 15 games last year and might be on his way out of the league. He would've been a great opportunity capitalist in IDP if he'd won a starting job for the 49ers, but now isn't worth rostering.
