Carlos Hyde has early grip on starting job in 49ers' backfield

San Francisco 49ers running back Carlos Hyde "appears set" as the team's starter, says Matt Maiocco of CSN Bay Area.

What It Means:

"He looks – right now – to be in good position as the team’s starting running back," Maiocco wrote of Hyde, noting his continued improvement in adapting to new head coach Kyle Shanahan's run scheme. It sounds like Hyde will be the starter come Week 1, with Tim Hightower behind him. Maiocco also noted that Rookie Joe Williams, considered by many to be a threat to Hyde's touches and playing time, has struggled early on at 49ers' camp, especially with securing the football.

numberFire's models have Hyde as the 21st-ranked running back entering the 2017 season. We project him to rush 224.2 times for 903.3 yards and 6.61 touchdowns this season, with another 128.4 receiving yards and 0.67 touchdowns on 22.5 catches.
