Bolden works as Pats 1st-team third-down back

Brandon Bolden gained 12 yards on five carries in the New England Patriots' third preseason game.

What It Means:

Most notably, Bolden is still running with the team's first-string, in what we've affectionately termed the Vereen Role. We had expected that James White or Travaris Cadet would have unseated the athletically-underwhelming Bolden by now, but he worked exclusively with alongside Jonas Gray with the 1's on Friday night.

Bolden is just patently underwhelming as a receiver. Last season, he ranked 56th out of 58 low-volume backs in Target Net Expected Points. This is a cumulative metric, and on just six targets, he accrued more lost value than everyone except Reggie Bush and Montee Ball. We don't like to doubt head coach Bill Belichick, but starting him over the better and younger White doesn't make much sense.
