Vincent Rey named starting strong-side linebacker by Bengals
The Bengals have promoted Vincent Rey into the starting lineup at strong-side linebacker, replacing Emmanuel Lamur.
This is just a formality, as Rey got first-team snaps at OTA's late in July, and has been with the 1's as the SAM 'backer for a few weeks now. He will start over Lamur in Monday night's preseason game against Tampa Bay.
Lamur was one of the worst 4-3 outside linebackers in the NFL in 2014, and Pro Football Focus graded him 39th out 40 qualifying players. Rey will be a slight upgrade in coverage, and a strong upgrade in run defense. We had projected Lamur for 91 tackles, 1 interception, and four passes defensed. Expect those numbers to rise a bit in Rey's projection, as he looks to bolster Cincy's 26th-ranked defense by schedule-adjusted Defensive Rushing NEP.
