Dolphins want Kenyan Drake to become well-rounded

The Miami Dolphins want running back Kenyan Drake to become more of a true every-down backup than change-of-pace back this season, head coach Adam Gase indicated.

What It Means:

Jay Ajayi is locked in as Miami's bellcow back, of course, but Gase wants Drake to become more of "an all-around back. We don’t want him to get stuck in one phase. We’ve got to be ready to go if Jay Ajayi [gets hurt]. Jay takes a lot of hits." Drake will battle Damien Williams to serve as Ajayi's direct backup this season.

Drake saw 33 carries last year, and Williams earned 35. On those touches, Drake generated 0.20 Rushing Net Expected Points (NEP) per attempt; Williams picked up 0.01. Drake's upside is much higher as the change-up back for Miami.
