Ameer Abdullah could see 'featured role' in Lions' offense
Detroit Lions running back Ameer Abdullah (foot) could see a "featured role" in 2017, believes the team's website.
"I'm just going to work my tail off and be the best back I can in the situations I'll be given this year," said Abdullah. "I'm really attacking things with a more focused mindset." He's still recovering from a torn ligament in his foot but is expected to be at 100 percent soon. While Theo Riddick will still dominate the passing work for Detroit, Abdullah could see the majority of the touches on early downs. He turns 24 in June. Zach Zenner, Dwayne Washington and Mike James are the only other running backs on the Lions' roster.
Injuries limited Abdullah to only 18 carries in 2016, but over that small sample, he did post a team-high 0.14 Rushing Net Expected Points (NEP) per carry. His -0.03 mark as a rookie in 2015 was also good for the second-highest mark on the team.
