Bills new general manager says quarterback job is up for grabs

Buffalo Bills new general manager Brandon Beane promised an "open competition" at quarterback while speaking with the Monday Morning Quarterback's Peter King. Coach Sean McDermott initially said Tyrod Taylor is the quarterback of the future, but he amended his statement after Beane's comments, saying it "remains to be seen" if that player is currently on the roster. In an interview with WGR 550 Buffalo on Monday morning, Beane added the Bills will continue to "turn over every stone" until they are "100 percent set" at quarterback. Despite a completely new front office and coaching staff, it is clear Taylor's spot atop the depth chart remains precarious. He would leave over $8.5 million in dead cap, but the Bills can get out of Taylor's contract after this season.

What It Means:

Head coach Sean McDermott agreed, saying it "remains to be seen" if the starter is on the roster. This comes after he previously named Taylor the team's quarterback of the future, but that's clearly not the case. We expect Tyrod to be under center for the Bills come Week 1, but his job security is far from guaranteed.

Among the 39 quarterbacks with at least 100 drop backs last season, Taylor's 0.12 Passing Net Expected Points (NEP) per drop back ranked 19th.
