Jaguars pick up Blake Bortles' fifth-year option

The Jacksonville Jaguars have exercised the fifth-year option on the contract of quarterback Blake Bortles.

What It Means:

This option is for the 2018 season, and it doesn't become guaranteed until next March when the 2018 league year begins. Therefore, this doesn't necessarily mean that the Jaguars can't look to upgrade at the quarterback position and avoid paying what is expected to be about $18 million to Bortles in 2018.

Bortles had the 10th-worst Passing Net Expected Points per drop back this season among the 39 quarterbacks with at least 100 drop backs. As a team, the Jaguars ranked 24th in the NFL in schedule-adjusted Offensive Net Expected Points per play.
