Seahawks stop Malik McDowell's fall at 35th pick of NFL Draft
The Seattle Seahawks selected Michigan State defensive lineman Malik McDowell with the 35th overall pick of the 2017 NFL draft.
McDowell -- 6’6" and 295 pounds -- made 23 starts in three seasons in college. He was named second-team All-Big Ten by the conference’s coaches as both a sophomore and junior. McDowell has experience as a pass-rusher from multiple positions on both the interior and edge. NFL scouts have ripped the rookie's work ethic, motor, and poor pre-draft interviews, but he possesses all the physical traits of a plus NFL starter. He’s a boom-bust prospect, the type of guy the Seahawks have succeeded with in the past.
McDowell tallied 24.5 tackles for loss and 7.5 sacks while forcing a pair of fumbles in his college career. He'll join a Seattle defense that's hoping to shore up a second-best defense by Adjusted Defensive Rushing Net Expected Points (NEP) per play and 15th-best by Adjusted Defensive Passing NEP per play.
