Alex Smith still starting for Chiefs in 2017

Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Alex Smith received head coach Andy Reid's backing once again as the 2017 starting quarterback following the selection of rookie Patrick Mahomes.

What It Means:

The Chiefs have spent much of the offseason propping up Smith, but on Thursday they traded three premium picks to come up 17 spots and take Mahomes. Reid acknowledged that Mahomes isn't ready, and Smith will be the starter for the immediate future. "I don’t worry about Alex on this," Reid said. "Alex knows we trust him. Alex is the starting quarterback. Nothing is going to change there.... He understands that. But there’s gonna be a day Alex isn’t playing anymore and we’ll need someone to step in and play." Smith's guaranteed money is up after 2017, so Mahomes very likely will be the 2018 starter.

Smith's game-manager ways led him to a 0.14 Passing Net Expected Points per drop back in 2016, just above the league average of 0.12. This was 16th among 39 quarterbacks with at least 100 drop backs.
