Blake Bortles

Jaguars unlikely to pick up Blake Bortles's fifth-year option

The Jacksonville Jaguars won't pick up quarterback Blake Bortles' fifth-year option for 2018, Ryan O'Halloran of the Florida Times Union guesses.

What It Means:

Exercising Bortles' option would have been a no-brainer a year ago after his breakout 2015 campaign. Rather than taking a step forward, Bortles showed significant regression in 2016 while struggling with his mechanics, and hasn't developed into the franchise quarterback the Jags were hoping for when they drafted him third overall in 2014. Jacksonville has until May 2 to pick up his option.

Bortles had the 10th-worst Passing Net Expected Points per drop back this season among the 39 quarterbacks with at least 100 drop backs. As a team, the Jaguars ranked 24th in the NFL in schedule-adjusted Offensive Net Expected Points per play.
