Patriots' Malcolm Butler, Saints engaged in contract talks
New England Patriots restricted free agent defensive back Malcolm Butler and the New Orleans Saints have opened contract negotiations, reports NFL Network's Ian Rapoport.
What It Means:
The two sides "hope to strike a deal this week," Rapoport says. The Patriots would receive the 11th overall pick in the draft from the Saints if they decline to match New Orleans' offer sheet for Butler. That's a steep price, so look for a trade to get worked out between the two teams.
Butler would serve as an upgrade for a New Orleans secondary that was third-worst in the NFL last season in schedule-adjusted Defensive Passing Net Expected Points allowed per play.
