Ravens don't see Danny Woodhead as stopgap
The Baltimore Ravens would have signed running back Danny Woodhead regardless of Kenneth Dixon's four-game PED suspension, general manager Ozzie Newsome insists.
Newsome admitted that Dixon's ban may have created a greater sense of urgency to sign Woodhead, but ultimately that was the direction the Ravens were headed in anyway. "Yes, he still would have been a big part of our conversation," said Newsome. "We still would have signed him." The Ravens envision Woodhead as an important piece of their passing-down offense all season, and not just a Band-Aid for when Dixon is out.
Woodhead saw just 19 rushes and 8 targets before succumbing to the injury in 2016, but generated 0.18 Rushing Net Expected Points (NEP) per attempt and 0.35 Reception NEP per target on them.
