Doug Martin

Buccaneers satisfied with running back situation

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers "may not be so grim" at running back, general manager Jason Licht said.

What It Means:

It suggests Tampa could go into 2017 without adding another back. The Bucs re-signed Jacquizz Rodgers and haven't given up on suspended RB Doug Martin. Barring a draft upgrade, Rodgers and Charles Sims could open the season in a committee.

Among the 42 running backs with at least 100 rushing attempts this year, Martin's -0.20 Rushing Net Expected Points (NEP) per attempt ranked second-worst. His career-worst Rushing NEP per attempt prior to 2016 was -0.10 during the 2013 season. Rodgers' 0.04 Rushing Net Expected Points (NEP) per attempt was 11th-best.
