New signing Brian Hoyer just a backup for the 49ers
The San Francisco 49ers agreed to terms with quarterback Brian Hoyer on a two-year contract, but head coach Kyle Shanahan views him as a "backup-type", NFL Network's Aditi Kinkhabwala reports.
Hoyer reunites in San Francisco with former offensive coordinator Kyle Shanahan, serving as a bridge until the 49ers find their long-term answer. If Kinkhabwala's report is true, it would seem his addition won't preclude the 49ers from pursuing Washington's Kirk Cousins. Hoyer should be viewed as a one-year stopgap at best.
Hoyer was dreadful under Shanahan in 2014 with the Cleveland Browns, registering a 55.3 percent completion rate, a 2.74 percent touchdown rate, and 2.97 percent interception rate. He earned 0.04 Passing Net Expected Points (NEP) per drop back that year, well below the league average of 0.10.
