Ryan Mathews likely to be cut or traded by Eagles
Philadelphia Eagles running back Ryan Mathews has "probably played his last game for the Eagles," the Philadelphia Inquirer says.
Mathews is owed a non-guaranteed $4 million salary coming off a serious neck injury, and releasing him would leave $1 million in dead money. Entering his age-30 season, it's going to take a pay cut for him to return. Head coach Doug Pederson said Wendell Smallwood is "in the mix" at running back, as well. Smallwood will be given a chance to compete but isn't going to be counted on after an uneven rookie year.
The Eagles' backfield accrued 0.01 Rushing Net Expected Points (NEP) per attempt this season, the 16th-best rate in the league.
