Vikings say they won't pick up Adrian Peterson's option

The Minnesota Vikings announced they will not pick up running back Adrian Peterson's 2017 option, making him an unrestricted free agent.

What It Means:

"Adrian is an important part of the Minnesota Vikings organization," Spielman said. "We will continue to have conversations with his representatives and leave our future options open while determining what is best for both parties moving forward." The Vikings were never expected to pick up Peterson's option, but it's possible he returns on a lesser deal. He'll likely see what he can get on the open market, but it's not expected to be much.

There were 88 running backs to notch at least 30 rushing attempts last year. Peterson earned -0.39 Rushing Net Expected Points per attempt, by far the worst rate among that group.
