Matt Schaub and Brian Hoyer on 49ers' bridge quarterback shortlist
Free agent quarterbacks Matt Schaub and Brian Hoyer are targets the San Francisco 49ers might pursue, the Sacramento Bee's Matt Barrows reports.
Schaub has been previously speculated as a fit in San Francisco after spending the last two years with head coach Kyle Shanahan with the Atlanta Falcons. Hoyer played for Shanahan with the Cleveland Browns, and has been far more effective in recent years than Schaub. The 49ers will likely be scraping the bottom of the barrel for veteran quarterback options, no matter who's available.
Over Schaub's last 99 drop backs -- which have been spread across three years -- he's earned -0.13 Passing Net Expected Points (NEP) per drop back. He hasn't posted a positive Passing NEP per drop back on more than five drop backs since 2012. Hoyer churned out 0.22 Passing NEP per drop back on 203 drop backs this year -- the eighth-best rate among quarterbacks to drop back at least 100 times.
