Bills not sure Reggie Ragland fits new defensive scheme

Buffalo Bills linebacker Reggie Ragland may not be a good fit in new head coach Sean McDermott's defensive scheme, according to the Buffalo News' Vic Carucci.

What It Means:

The Bills traded up to select Ragland last year only to see him tear his ACL and miss his entire rookie season. He was projected to be a terrific fit in ex-coach Rex Ryan's 3-4, but Ragland's future is now unclear. Best fit as a middle linebacker at 6'2", 252 lbs., Ragland might be stuck behind the more established Preston Brown (6'1", 251) in McDermott's unit. In Carolina, both of McDermott's outside linebackers -- Thomas Davis (6'1", 231) and Shaq Thompson (6'1", 220) -- were speedy and athletic; Ragland is a powerful thumper.

Buffalo ranked 20th in opponent-adjusted Defensive Net Expected Points per play last year. Brown has averaged 123 combined tackles per season since entering the league in 2014 and is the perfect middle linebacker for Buffalo's new 4-3.
