Falcons' Matt Schaub could follow Kyle Shanahan to 49ers
Atlanta Falcons quarterback Matt Schaub could follow offensive coordinator Kyle Shanahan to the San Francisco 49ers this offseason, according to ESPN's Adam Schefter.
Shanahan is expected to be named the Niners' next head coach shortly after the Super Bowl, but is also high on New England Patriots backup Jimmy Garoppolo. Schaub has started just two games over his last three seasons, and if he joins Shanahan in San Francisco, he would be employed as either a backup or a bridge to a future franchise quarterback. Incumbent Niners starter Colin Kaepernick is fully expected to opt out of his contract.
Over Schaub's last 99 drop backs -- which have been spread across three years -- he's earned -12.98 Passing Net Expected Points (NEP). He hasn't posted a positive Passing NEP per drop back on more than five drop backs since 2012.
