Carson Palmer is seriously considering retirement from Cardinals

Arizona Cardinals quarterback Carson Palmer's retirement is a serious possibility based on conversations with general managers and head coaches around the league, NFL Network's Ian Rapoport reports.

What It Means:

Rapoport reports Palmer is "tired, worn down, and trying to see how his body responds" following "the most physically trying season of his career." One prominent general manager told him that Palmer "has played his last down" based on "watching Palmer this year." Palmer certainly showed signs of breakdown at age 37, and Rapoport suggests the Cardinals would make a run at Tony Romo or free agent Mike Glennon if Palmer hung up the cleats. Wide receiver Larry Fitzgerald could follow Palmer out the door if he indeed calls it quits.

Palmer looked sluggish at times in 2016 but finished with 26 touchdown passes and 4,233 passing yards. His 0.11 Passing Net Expected Points per drop back ranked 21st out of the 39 quarterbacks to drop back at least 100 times in 2016.
