Brock Osweiler

Texans won't name Wild Card starting quarterback until Tuesday

Houston Texans head coach Bill O'Brien expects to name a starting quarterback for the Wild Card round on Tuesday.

What It Means:

O'Brien also admitted that Brock Osweiler played well enough on Sunday to put himself into consideration regardless of Tom Savage's (concussion) health. The Houston Chronicle's John McClain expects Brock Osweiler to start, and NFL Network's Ian Rapoport agreed it would be "virtually impossible" for Tom Savage to start after suffering a concussion in Sunday's loss. Regardless of the identity of their Week 18 signal caller, the Texans are very likely to play run-first football in the Wild Card Round.

Savage and Osweiler have put up identical -0.04 Passing Net Expected Points per drop back rates this year, but Osweiler has 459 more drop backs he's done that on, and is being paid a ton more. Expect the Texans to try to justify his contract with a start in the playoffs regardless of Savage's health.
