Matt Jones (knee) falling down depth chart in Redskins' backfield

Washington Redskins running back Matt Jones (knee) will have to "earn his way back," head coach Jay Gruden stated on Monday.

What It Means:

Jones was already looking at less work before he missed Week 8 with a knee injury, and Gruden apparently likes what he saw from both Rob Kelley and Chris Thompson during a 27-27 tie with the Cincinnati Bengals in London. Jones has improved as a runner since his rookie year, but remains inconsistent with his production -- while consistently putting the ball on the ground. Kelley will likely see the most touches in Week 10, but he doesn't make for an appealing option against the Minnesota Vikings.

Kelley is first in Washington's backfield with 0.10 Rushing Net Expected Points (NEP) per play this season. Thompson comes in second with 0.05 Rushing NEP per play, while Jones brings up the rear with -0.03 Rushing NEP per play through eight games for the Redskins.
