Colin Kaepernick, 49ers restructuring deal to remove injury guarantees

San Francisco 49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick is "closing in on" a restructured contract with the team that would alleviate the concerns regarding the injury guarantees in his current deal, reports Ian Rapoport of NFL Network.

What It Means:

If there's any doubt that head coach Chip Kelly is considering a quarterback change, this should serve as the smoking gun. There have been multiple reports that Kaepernick has stunk it up in practice, and the 49ers have also pointed to Kaepernick's slimmed-down physique as reason for keeping him off the field. Despite this, the likely cause for Kaep not playing has been the large sum of money tied up in injury guarantees to the 28-year-old quarterback. There is reportedly a recent Christian Ponder movement brewing in the locker room, but things are beginning to point towards Kaepernick starting in Week 6 when the 49ers travel to Buffalo for a matchup with the Bills.

Gabbert completed 18-of-31 passes for 162 yards, one touchdown and two interceptions in Thursday night's loss to the Arizona Cardinals, earning a lousy -10.18 Net Expected Points.
