The Minnesota Vikings want running back Adrian Peterson to retire "as a valued member of the organization," according to NFL Network's Ian Rapoport.
There's been speculation the team could move on from Peterson this offseason because of his contract. If the Vikings want to keep him in Minnesota for the long run, they will probably have to renegotiate Peterson's deal after taking on Sam Bradford's expensive salary. Peterson is scheduled to earn $11.75 million in base salary next season along with a $6 million roster bonus due on the third day of the new year.
Peterson's -8.93 Rushing Net Expected Points are the second-worst among running backs to start the season.
